Alumina Bubble Bricks

Alumina Bubble Bricks are for applications up to 1800°C / 3270°F.  These bricks have excellent insulating properties and high strengths at high temperatures. Alumina bubble bricks are made with tiny hollow insulating spheres made from high-purity alumina (also called bubble alumina). Alumina does not exhibit high thermal conductivity, and when in the form of hollow spheres, its thermal conductivity is reduced further. Both properties make alumina buuble brick an excellent insulating material that can withstand exceptionally high temperatures. Typical applications for Bubble alumina bricks include gas or electrically heated kilns and furnaces as well as glass making industries.

The insulating firebrick (IFB) that contain high-alumina bubbles are often used as the working liners in ceramic kilns, backup liners in gasifiers for coal and petroleum coke / gas / oil (with heavy residue feed stock), and industrial waste. These IFBs are also used in hazardous waste and fluorine processing incinerators, hydrogen generators, automatic thermal reactors for methanol production, and ammonia reformers.

High-purity alumina hollow insulating spheres are designed to withstand high temperatures and demanding environments. The bubbles themselves are an important component in refractories used for ceramic tile linings in gas turbines to backup linings in reactors and working linings in manufacturing high-purity quartz for the electronics industry.

Acid Resistant Bricks or acid bricks that are specially made and are chemically resistant and thermally durable. Acid brick is created from high silica shale and fired at very high temperatures. Benefits of using Acid Brick include:

  • Allowing plastic membranes to operate in high temperature (up to 450° F) environments

  • Provide vessel protection from Acids, Alkalis, Oxidizers, Solvents

  • Provide resistance to mechanical vibration and other physical shock

  • More economical than other options like alloys or glass lined vessels

  • Lining can be shop or field installed

All necessary heat transfer and stress calculations for any lining combination can be calculated per the intended application

Alumina Spinel Bricks

Alumina Spinel Bricks provide a path for the extended treatment needed in the production of clean steel. Alumina Spinel Bricks have had a significant impact on steel ladle refractories such as the need for high performance purging plugs. Operational changes such as increasing tapping temperatures, longer hold times, and more aggressive secondary metallurgy is countered by satisfying the need for thinner refractory linings and longer refractories life with Alumina Spinel Bricks.  Alumina Spinel Bricks are increasingly being used in refractories for steelmaking due to their particular combination of resistance to steel-making slag corrosion, thermal shock resistance and excellent hot strength. Currently, there are no known natural sources for spinel as refractory raw material are not known, therefore Alumina Spinel Bricks must be produced synthetically.

The following figure indicates a slag corrosion test via an induction furnace.  Those samples introduced to aluminate spinel are 1,3,5, and 6.  The samples exhibit minimal corrosion.

AZS Bricks or Alumina-Zirconia-Silica (Al2O3-ZrO2-SiO2) refractories belong to sintered products family along with Zircon Mullite, Bonded AZS, Zirconia Corundum and Rebounded Fused Mullite bricks. The sintering process reduces the porosity and enhances properties such as strength, electrical conductivity, translucency and thermal conductivity.  It is often times useful to increase its strength but keep its gas absorbency constant as in filters or catalysts. Sintered Al2O3-ZrO2- SiO2 products have good resistance to alkali vapor and thermal shock, and are mainly used in glass furnaces, they can withstand aggressive conditions when in contact with molten glass. Typical applications are superstructures, skew blocks, wall bricks and upper-checker in regenerators, paving, sub-paving, and fore hearth blocks in float glass furnaces. Rebounded Fused Mullite bricks (MFZ-6) are used as pure-oxygen burner blocks in alkali-free glass furnaces, crown blocks, and arch blocks in ceramic frit furnaces. They are also used in high temperature and high thermal stress applications for industrial furnaces.
